Testimonials

Students & Colleagues In Their Own Words

"

Betsy shared with her wealth of vocal and artistic wisdom gained through her storied years of dedication to our craft, but also urged me to take ownership and command of my own instrument- a winning combination in the teaching of singing.

Juilliard Graduate • Winner YCA Competition • Metropolitan Opera Singer

Betsy is an incredible teacher. Whether you’re looking to start fresh from the ground up, need a quick tune up, or anywhere in between, she meets you where you are. Lessons are collaborative; you find your common language and navigate the voice together. Singing can become unnecessarily complicated, and Betsy has a no-nonsense, efficient approach to technique. She is always learning and trying new things, and I really appreciate that when we work together. If you’re new to singing, on your journey, or singing all over the world, she’s got you. I’m so glad to have her on my team and in my corner.

Whenever I’m asked for a recommendation for a voice teacher, Betsy Bishop is always one of the first teachers I think of. She’s intuitive about voices and has a plethora of experience from teaching high school age singers through to those having major careers - and everyone in between. Betsy somehow knows what each singer needs, and offers technique based on her 30-plus year career, as well as her broad base of teaching skills. She is direct, funny, smart, and kind. Additionally, she knows the elements that make a strong audition package either to get into a university or conservatory, or to make a memorable showing in a professional audition. Everyone who works with her grows, which is not something to be said lightly!

"

Ms. Bishop’s teaching has been a pivotal factor in my development as a singer, and she has guided me towards becoming the best musician I can be. In addition to her tremendous wealth of vocal knowledge, she is incredibly kind and caring. She is inspiring because she serves as a role model of a lifelong learner and a selfless educator. I am truly grateful to Ms. Bishop because her teaching has made my dream of pursuing music as a vocation an attainable reality. With the skills she has taught me and the confidence this has instilled, I am now studying music both academically and as a singer.

I look back on my days playing for Betsy’s lessons with great fondness; she consistently cultivates an atmosphere of confidence, clarity, kindness, and above all a love of theatrical, operatic singing.

I am a proud former student of the incomparable Betsy Bishop. As musicians, finding the right fit for a teacher is essential but, especially for singers, it requires a lengthier search to find vulnerability, trust, and an open sense of navigation that’s reciprocal all while working with an intangible mechanism. When matched properly the results can lead to astonishing breakthroughs of technique and an incredible bond of friendship, as working with a voice is so deeply personal and innately you.

I studied with Betsy for 4 years when finishing my undergraduate and graduate degrees at Juilliard and wouldn’t change it for the world. I felt an immediate spark in my first lesson with Betsy and knew then she was what I wanted and needed. Boy did she go above and beyond all my expectations; making custom warmup routines, a technique checklist, a vocabulary only we shared, a technique bookclub, repertoire suggestions, stagecraft seminars, audition and career planning, and so much more! I cherished every lesson because they were met with countless good laughs and a plan for discovery. Betsy is a born teacher and pours her heart and soul into every student. My time with her was priceless and I’m extremely grateful that I was her student.

Philosophy of Teaching

My goal as a teacher is to ensure each student understands how their instrument functions, has the tools to produce and maintain their best sound, understands how to use that sound to make music, and knows how to troubleshoot problems on their own. Every singer’s path to mastering those skills will be different, because every singer has a unique instrument and must adapt the principles of technique to work with it. Helping each individual discover the approach most useful to them is what I love about teaching classical voice.
